Today we celebrate the strength of Raswad Menkrabea is a political and social activist with Jamaican and Ghanaian citizenship who has resided in Ghana over two decades. He has practically been involved in various levels of political organizational development and activism.
He is a visual artist by profession and prior to repatriating to Ghana has been involved in various professional works in the United States. He was the Artist in Residence at the Romere Bearden Art Center, Atlanta – US, Peter Tosh’s “Mama Africa” album designer, Mutaburaka’s “Outcry” album designer, worked with CCMRC Postal Design in Guyana, and has held various art exhibitions in the West Indies, US and Ghana on various revolutionary themes.
He had his basic education in Jamaica and continued in US at the Portfolio Centre for Advertising Illustration and Graphic Design based in Atlanta. He is now an artistic consultant, entrepreneur and still a revolutionary activist. Recently, one of his sons and another dreadlock student were unlawfully refused admission into Achimota School, a historically prestigious school in Ghana. The Human Rights Court sitting in Accra ruled in favour of the students, enforcing their right and laying a precedence for all dreadlock students to be guaranteed their right to education without any religious discrimination. Aswad provided leadership in ensuring this court victory.
He is one of the leaders of Hempire Association of Africa, today, fighting for the decriminalizaton and legalization of cannabis on the continent. He is also a member of the Coalition For Justice and Public Health and the Ghana/Cuba Solidarity Committee.
